1800’s Log Cabin Moved to Courthouse Grounds
The log cabin was purchased from Larry Hale at Thebes, Illinois. The project to disassemble, move and reassemble it on the Thebes Courthouse grounds was led by Harold McNelly of Thebes. Many volunteers, too numerous to name here volunteered hours of work, donated tools and equipment for the job and made financial donations that enabled this project to be completed. Tony Walden built the foundation and later the porch and roof. This phase was largely made possible by a generous grant from Southern Foundation, Inc.
After a brief stall to raise funding and circumvent winter weather and Covid-19, work resumed in spring and summer of 2020. David Hale and his daughter Heather Wilburn completed the chinking, which was a difficult and tedious job! They also installed the flooring. They then got electricity run to the cabin, installed interior wiring, outlets and lights. The chinking and part of the electrical was made possible by another generous grant from Southern Foundation, Inc. We also received numerous donations from individuals in order to make this possible. We are so close to completion and are anxious to set it up as a small museum, representative of pioneer life.
