MEMORIAL WEEKEND 2026

"Murder on the Mississippi"
A murder mystery lunch and dinner
June 20, 2026 at noon and 5 PM
Tickets are $25 each

There will be two shows on this day, one at noon and one at 5 PM.  The event will be held at the Olive Branch Community Center at 22434 Railroad Street in Olive Branch, Illinois. Food will be catered by Chuck Pearman of Sweet & Sassy Treats in Olive Branch.
The setting for the play is 1841 aboard "The Time & Tide," a steamboat docked at the Thebes Landing as we celebrate Independence Day.  Period clothing is encouraged, but not required.  Join in the fun as we incorporate audience participation in this entertaining "whodunnit."  The menu is posted below in the flyer and you can contact us for tickets on our Facebook page:  "Thebes Historical Courthouse"
Each ticket is assigned a table and seat number at the time of purchase.  It is a small venue (approximately 80 seats) so all seats will be close to the action.  THE SEATS FOR LUNCH & DINNER ARE SOLD OUT!

2023 Memorial Day Event

The 1848 Thebes Courthouse will reopen for tours on Memorial Day weekend.  We will be opening on Saturday, May 27th from 11 AM to 2 PM.

The Thebes Historical Society plans to host a Memorial Day weekend event on Sunday, May 28th from 10 AM to 3 PM.  Tim Cook's food truck, Smoky Hill BBQ will be serving food on site and the historical society will have sodas, bottled water and snacks available for purchase.  A community worship service will begin at 10 AM inside the courthouse, with the Olive Branch Methodist Church leading worship.  Pastor Brent Gordon will bring the message.

Also on Sunday, there will be a book signing for a new book entitled, "Thebes, Illinois:  Echoes of the Past" which focuses upon the years 1900-1935.  Authors Tess Hazel-Ford and Archie G. Ford will be present for a book signing from noon to 2 PM, with a limited number of copies available for purchase.  They are also available on the Barnes & Noble website.

The quilt raffle is especially exciting this year as we will raffle off a queen-size patriotic quilt with embroidered patterns of the 1848 Thebes Courthouse.  Jo Ann Sissom of Olive Branch, IL donated and embroidered the blocks.  Debbie Carlton of Cape Girardeau does the quilting.  Tickets are $2 each or 6 for $10.  You need not be present to win but the winner is responsible for picking up the quilt or paying for shipping.  The winning ticket will be drawn at 2 PM on Sunday, May 28th.

This event is our primary fundraiser for the year.  The Thebes Historical Society is a small group of unpaid volunteers and we depend upon the generous support of the public to accomplish our mission.  We welcome new members who are interested in helping us preserve and maintain the courthouse.

2021 Living History Day

Saturday, October 9 at 2:00 PM

Thebes was the county seat of Alexander County from 1845 until 1860. We will reenact court cases from this time period. Much liberty is taken with the information we gather from old court records and newspaper articles. Come join the fun!

Donations accepted for admission.
